How Often Should I Service My Septic System?

Updated: Jan 18, 2024

Septic system repairs and maintenance intervals depend greatly on what type of system you have. At the very least, a few components of your system should be checked annually. These include:

  • Effluent Filter

  • Distribution Box (if installed)

  • Septic Tank

  • Pump Chamber (if installed)

If these items are not checked regularly, it can have catastrophic effects on your system and can lead to failure. For example, if your effluent filter is not cleaned regularly, it can clog and can potentially lead to backups into your home. If your pump distribution box is not regularly checked, it could be full of water which can also lead to a potential back up. A full distribution box is also a sign that your field is clogged or failing. Maintenance such as a hydro flush could potentially clear the lines and allow it to function properly.

Finding the right septic professional for inspections and regular maintenance recommendations is essential to the longevity of your septic system. After a septic system service, a professional can create a maintenance plan for specific to your system to show you each component and how they work together. In this document it should also include service intervals for each component in your system.
