What is a Type 1 Septic System?
A Type 1 system is the most common and traditional form of wastewater treatment. It relies on a septic tank and a gravity-fed drainfield (also known as a dispersal bed or trench) to treat household wastewater.
In a Type 1 system, solids settle in the septic tank, while effluent — partially treated liquid waste — flows into the drainfield, where soil bacteria provide the final level of treatment as the water filters into the ground.
Because this type of system depends heavily on natural soil conditions, it’s only suitable for properties with good drainage, adequate soil depth, and enough space for a dispersal area. It’s simple, reliable, and cost-effective — but not suitable for every site.

What is a Type 2 Septic System?
A Type 2 system provides a higher level of treatment using an aerobic treatment unit (ATU) or similar advanced filtration technology. After leaving the septic tank, wastewater passes through a secondary treatment process that introduces oxygen, allowing beneficial bacteria to break down contaminants more thoroughly.
The treated effluent that leaves a Type 2 system is much cleaner than from a Type 1 system — which means it can often be discharged into smaller or more challenging sites, such as rocky terrain, areas with poor drainage, or lots near water bodies.
Type 2 systems are typically more complex and more expensive to install and maintain, but they provide flexibility where a conventional system won’t meet environmental or regulatory standards.

Installation Costs: A Type 1 system is generally less expensive, while a Type 2 can cost more due to additional components and engineering.
Site Flexibility: Type 2 systems are ideal for smaller or environmentally sensitive properties that don’t meet the soil or setback requirements for a Type 1 system.
Maintenance: Type 2 systems require regular inspections and servicing (often every 6–12 months), whereas Type 1 systems usually need only periodic tank pumping.
